“Bad Science”, by Ben Goldacre
One of our biology tutors, James Foster, highly recommends “Bad Science” by Ben Goldacre for those who are preparing for GAMSAT. See why below: Written by a doctor and medical researcher, this book examines the bizarre and sometimes fraudulent health claims made by lazy teachers, unscrupulous quacks and poor scientists. It’s a deceptively easy book to read – always interesting, and often extremely funny. Along the way, however, the author applies rigorous scientific reasoning to his subject-matter, explains the scientific method, and exposes bad scientific practice. These are exactly the kind of skills that GAMSAT is testing, so the book is an excellent way of training yourself to think in the required manner. It will help you think critically – essential in GAMSAT – but it is also a useful manual of scientific method for anyone pursuing a career as a clinician or a scientist.
