ANSWERS TO
QUESTIONS 9 - 10:
9) The correct answer is B. There is a
patterning in contrasts throughout. (Passage one begins with "Yes", passage two
with "But"; passage one is positive, passage two negative, passage one
associated with the mother, passage two with the father, happiness is
contrasted with misery and violence, and so on). Answer A is only correct to
the degree that there must be some continuity for the sake of coherence, it
does not pin down the essential structural device, and the same can be said for
answer D. Answer C is based on a completely superficial reading.
10) An easy question for anyone who has got all the other
answers right! The correct answer is D. Passage one begins with the author's
introduction, after which we begin to move into the stream of consciousness of
James Ramsay, then into Mrs Ramsay's mind via the author once again. Passage
two begins with the author once again guiding the reader, swiftly moving into
the mind of James Ramsay for a moment before the second half of the passage in
which Mr Ramsay and the author appear to jostle for position and in which we
have two over-lapping points of view. All four possible view points are thus
exploited, and because of this answers A B and C are of course wrong.
