Some Thoughts on Work Experience

Just some thoughts on work experience: Work experience is an obvious and integral part of any preparation for application to medical school, and its importance cannot be overrated for a number of reasons. Of course, it makes perfect sense for anyone considering a career in this challenging field to observe the reality of everyday life as a doctor. Of equal significance is experiencing the way in which multi-disciplinary medical teams form the nucleus of the polymath that is the NHS. Another highly important aspect touches upon personal reflection and reflective practice, fundamental to understanding ourselves. One of the hardest questions to answer is often one of the seemingly simplest – why do you want to be a doctor?  Straightforward, but is it? In-depth self-awareness and character insight give us a greater ability to fully understand our motivation, and help us answer questions such as this with greater conviction. More will follow on work experience and reflective practice, but in the interim, the link below makes interesting reading.
